Lost Phone or Tampered Kit? The Two Playbooks (Privacy Travel Kit)

4:20The Build

Nothing loads from YouTube until you press play. The video then plays in YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode. Everything on screen in the Hardware Lab is a training value.

Phase 6 of the Communication Suite build: what to do when something goes wrong. If the phone is lost or stolen: shut the laptop down so its disk stays locked, remember that a switched-off or rebooted phone is protected (it re-locks and re-encrypts on its auto-reboot timer), assume its accounts are exposed, and restore on a replacement from the micro-SD vault backup (Signal or Molly with the registration-lock PIN, Cape with its 24-word phrase, SimpleX with its database backup). Message history isn't recovered, by design, and any identity that may be compromised is treated as burned. If you suspect tampering: stop, radios off, kit into the Faraday bag, check from a clean channel, and never try to clean a suspect device. Rebuild from a fresh install with new accounts.

What you’ll learn

  • Recover from a lost or stolen phone
  • Respond to suspected tampering
  • Know when an identity is burned

The honest limits

Message history isn't recovered, by design. Rotate the Mullvad account only if it may be compromised; the presentation page overstates this. The Hardware Lab doesn't model a lost phone or tampering; its recovery rehearsal is a simulation.
